Setting up your own PERSONAL WEBSITE

The purpose of this page is NOT to tell you how to write web pages - that information is available other places on the net. The purpose of this page is to tell you how to put your page on our server. Before we get into that step-by-step section, a couple of words on our policies.

First, Free personal web pages must be non-commercial in nature, and are limited to 5 megabytes of disk space. If you're not sure if your page is non-commercial, here's the simple test. If your page advertises a product you sell or a service you perform for money, or in any way entices individuals or businesses to send you money, then it's commercial in nature. However, if you are (for instance) an Apple fan, and want to promote their product on your page, but don't ask folks to send you money (or ask Apple to send you money!), then it's personal in nature, and qualifies for a free page. Bottom line, follow the money! Commercial web pages are stored on our commercial server, and rates begin at $30/month. Additionally, personal pages larger than 5 megabytes will be hosted still as a personal page for $5 per month per additional 5MB. All userpages will be subject to additional bandwidth surcharges when a user's pages transfer a total of 20MB per month or more. Now, I know this sounds like a lot, but these limitations should be no problem for 99% of our user websites.

In addition, there are a few limitations on website content. Web pages hosted by Dixie-Net cannot contain the following:

1. Profanity, nudity, or indecency.
2. Anything that violates Federal, State, or Local laws.
3. Unauthorized use of copyrighted material.
4. Any material intended to harm another individual or group.
5. No direct links to any of the above from your pages.

Within these simple limitations, we are extremely pleased to host your personal website.

Setting up your own web page is actually fairly simple. Before starting our step-by-step instructions, however, it might be wise to view our page on How to use FTP. This page will tell you how to upload files to our server. While it specifically talks about uploading into the FTP directory, you can use the same procedures to upload your HTML files onto our site. If you have any questions about uploading your pages to our server, please email your questions to sysop@dixie-net.com.

Step-by-Step instructions

Before you are ready to upload your web pages to our server, we must set up a folder for you to put your your files. Once that has been set up, you can upload and view your site. Here are the steps to setting up your website:

1. Email sysop and ask that your webspace be set up on our server.
2. Write your HTML files.
3. Upload your files into the "homepage" folder which the sysop has set up for you. If you're not sure how to upload files, check out our FTP tutorial at

http://ww2.dixie-net.com/dixienet/ftp.htm

The discussion there refers primarily to the folder in your home directory labeled 'ftp', but these concepts also apply to the 'homepage' folder.

4. View your web pages.
5. Go to your favorite search engines, and list your site so others can find it!
6. If you wish to be listed in our "users" section, email sysop and request to be listed (please be sure to tell us which server you dial in to-- Tupelo, Oxford, etc.).

A couple of things to remember:

First, your "home" page (the first page that visitors see when they access your site) MUST be named "index.htm" or "index.html". Otherwise, no one will be able to view your site.

Second, our system recognizes the difference between upper and lower case letters. When your HTML program looks for a graphic (.gif or .jpg), or when you link to another site, make sure your filenames match the language in your HTML document. For example, "fred.gif" and "Fred.gif" are NOT the same.

That's all there is to it! The URL for viewing your web pages is

http://ww2.dixie-net.com/username

where 'username' is your login name.

We look forward to viewing your website! Thanks for choosing and using Dixie-net!
