UPDATED THURSDAY – July 29, 2005

Dear League Members and Potential Members,

It is with extreme regret that I announce that I will not be able to continue as Commissioner of the SCSL.  A combination of personal reasons and failure on behalf of over half of the League member schools to contact me as of yet this year has left me with no other choice.

I will be happy to accommodate someone else coming forward to head up the League but have had no "takers" so far.  If someone is interested, I will assist to the best of my ability to forward any info I have that might help that cause.  It now is so late that I am not sure how anyone could pull it off.  I had every intention to stay with the League for this one last season even though I am physically transferring to Washington state within the next month.  I waited to see which teams would check in by our check-in date (now long, long past) and am sorry to say that only eight of the twenty teams have done so.  To those teams that have, I thank you and appreciate your attempt to continue the League with your personal efforts to comply with the policies concerning check in.  To the rest, I'm not sure what to say.  I know that I can not continue to be 80-90% of the effort to operate the League especially when cooperation is so lacking.

Playing soccer is what this League is all about...but there are other responsibilities that are expected from both me and your schools.  Each of you is a Club team.  Part of that responsibility is to learn through action what it takes to be a successful organization...not just on the field, but just as importantly as leaders and team members alike off the field.  One of the reasons that your schools allow for club status is the fact that they expect you to perform organizational club duties and learn what it takes to run a club...the good and the bad.  The SCSL relieved each of you of many of those duties such as scheduling, disciplining and arranging avenues for each of you to be eligible for National Tournaments.  My best meant intentions to help each of you may have contributed to your lack of cooperation.  In the past, I would spend hours on the phone and e-mail in attempts to run you down prior to season's start...this year I decided to wait it out and see if you would come through.  The fact that the majority did not leads me to think that it is time for me to remove myself from his equation and hand it back over to you, the students.

I have discussed our situation with Lisa Hanson from NIRSA and I have told her that I will help arrange a tournament in this area to serve as a Region II Qualifier in addition to the one to be held in North Carolina.  That will allow for each of you to still be eligible for Nationals.

Lisa asked me to let each of you know that you will need to report all scores and info to her at region2soccer@yahoo.com .

If no one steps forward in the next two days I will assume that the SCSL will not operate for the 2005 season.  This, although not particularly easy to swallow, might not be as bad as it sounds.  Many teams in our Region have operated as independents for years.  There will be far less expenses, far fewer requirements, and far more flexibility when it comes to opponents and scheduling.  The main change will be that you, as individual teams, must perform those duties.

I will continue to leave the website up for now.  I will be updating it soon with a list of all contacts I have on record so that each of you can schedule games.  The website for NIRSA is http://www.NIRSA.org . You will find all of the info you need to qualify for nationals on the site...basically, a minimum of 6 matches reported to NIRSA.  Lisa will continue to use a ranking system for the possibility of a wild card 3rd bid in addition to two qualifying tournaments.

In closing...I could really go on here but there is no real point. I have made my decision not to continue and will not reconsider that decision under any circumstances.  I want each of you to know that I consider myself extremely blessed to have been able to be part of your lives and hope that I leave each of you and the hundreds of players before you with good memories of me and the many soccer matches I've had a part in...each was special as is each of your futures...I hope that all of you enjoy long lives and fulfill all of your dreams.

God's speed to each of you...take good care.
