• Corinth's Role in History

In 1854, the Memphis and Ohio railway, which ran through the center of present day Corinth, was built. Plans were set in motion for the crossing of two railroads, the Memphis and Charleston and the Mobile and Ohio. Of course the first crossing of two major tracks in the South brought great interest, and in 1855 the predecessor of Corinth, Cross City, was born. Shortly thereafter the name was changed to Corinth. In early 1861 the tracks were completed and trains started passing regularly through the town. By 1861 many businesses had begun operation and in 1857 the Corona Women's College was started. Corinth, in a short time, had become a thriving community. Very important to the South was the railroad depot which could transfer goods from the tracks leading north to south onto the tracks that supplied goods to the East and West. Not enough emphasis can be placed on the importance of railroads during this period in history. The trains were much more important in those times than 18 wheeler trucks in today's world. As we now have many means of speedy transportation! Return to Home
