Waitstill Lawson Day was born in Benton County, Mississippi in 1917. He entered the service April 24, 1941 and was in the 932nd Field Artillery. He received his training at Ft. McClellan, Alabama and Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. He went overseas on August 2, 1943 to Italy, France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct medal, American Defense Service medal, EAMETO medal. He is the son of Mr. And Mrs. Carl R. Day of Mathiston, Mississippi. He was discharged from Camp Shelby, Mississippi on September 15, 1945. (Tippah Countians in the Service – 1941-1947, p. 201.)
